Recent studies revealed that sleep is an important factor in learning. According to the research, there was a direct, positive correlation between how much sleep a person is having and their ability to learn, remember, and think. Volunteers who slept eight hours outperformed those who only received six hours of sleep. Furthermore, experts contend that an inappropriate amount of sleep will hinder ones mood, causing them to be irritable and unhappy. 

Perhaps the best way to determine why we need sleep is to take a look at what happens when we aren’t sleeping enough. Sleep deprivation is defined as a condition in which a person isn’t having enough sleep. Because sleep is an essential, biological function, the amount of sleep a person needs each night is dependent upon many factors including his or her age. Generally speaking, infants need approximately 14 to 16 hours a day while teenagers require only about 9 hours of sleep. Most adults should be sleeping between 7 and 8 hours each night. If for some reason, a person isn’t getting enough sleep, they will obviously suffer from a lack of energy. In addition, those not getting the sleep they need could suffer serious health issues. 


Sleep deprivation may cause one or more of the following symptoms: 
• Increased risk of motor vehicle accidents
• Increased body mass index
• Greater likelihood of obesity due to an increased appetite
• Increased risk of diabetes and heart issues
• Greater risk of psychiatric issues (depression, substance abuse, etc...)
• Memory Issues
• Weakened immune system
• Lower attention span
• Lower reaction time

Getting the correct amount of sleep is, as mentioned above, an important biological function whose effects continue throughout the entire day. The right mattress may make all the difference.
